the whole “we can’t put gay people in movies because then they won’t do well with international audiences” excuse is both homophobic AND imperialist. Movie studios don’t want to put gay people in their movies to begin with, but now they have a convenient scapegoat so they can say “actually we love gay people and wish we could show them but unfortunately china is homophobic :(” If western studios REALLY cared about gay people they’d put their money where their mouth is and lead by example rather than racistly shifting the blame to “international markets”. It’s so hypocritical to criticize censorship in places like china and russia when disney still hasn’t put any canon gay characters in star wars or marvel movies because they’re too big of cowardly, capitalist pigs to risk losing a little revenue. Just admit the truth—that you actually don’t give a shit about gay people either—or step the fuck up.
