The studio and the filmmakers are about to find out if their bet will pay off. The movie, based on Kevin Kwan’s bestselling novel about a young Chinese American economics professor who discovers her boyfriend comes from one of Singapore’s wealthiest families, is expected to collect a solid $29 million through Sunday, according to pre-release audience surveys.
The movie will be released in international markets, including most Asian countries, in the coming weeks. “Crazy Rich Asians” does not yet have a release date for mainland China, the world’s second-largest box office market. However, it could do strong business there because of its cultural themes and cast, which includes Malaysian cinema star Michelle Yeoh (“Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon”).
