There’s every chance that to keep up appearances Tim did the rich person thing when decorating his house and got an interior decorator and that nothing about it is really significant to his character. There’s every chance that said interior decorator suggested the piano for an affectation of culture, but I like to think that it’s actually Tim’s (I mean it’s a grand!!)
Janet Drake taught him herself (because you cannot convince me she was the shrew fannon makes her out to be – but that’s another post) until he started school then she insisted lessons be part of his curriculum. When she died, and Tim transferred to public school, he wanted to quit, being Robin was more important than music lessons, but Bruce wouldn’t let him. It was the only extracurricular he encouraged Tim in – he even hired the best pianist in Gotham to continue Tim’s lessons.
Tim didn’t understand why until the first anniversary of his mother’s death was approaching. Rather than practicing, he was playing his part of her favorite duet when Bruce settled on the bench next to him with a quiet, ”may I?” When Tim acquiesced Bruce began to play the other half of the duet. They played together, and by the end of the song, Tim was crying. Bruce wrapped him in a hug and said, ”the pain will never leave you, but there will be things that bring you comfort and a type of peace. Don’t push away the things that remind you of her.”
