The clat will be more dramatic due to the screen shattering
Like I read superhero comics sometimes, and I will put up with anything. Like I’ll buy a comic from some garbage comics company. I don’t wanna name an actual comics company so let’s make one up let’s call it “DC comics” – so I’ll buy a comic from DC comics. And I’ll show up at the comics shop and I’ll go “Can I read the latest issue of my favourite series now, please?” And they go “No. We’ve cancelled it.” And I go “OKAAAAY” and then I go to read some Marvel comics, and then I come back from reading Marvel comics and I go “any updates?” and they go “Yeah, we cancelled your second favourite series while you were reading Marvel. Because we hate you. Now take all this build up for a wedding between Batman and Catwoman that won’t go anywhere, go FETCH!” And I go “OKAAAAY” and then I go over to Tom King’s Batman and go “Can I have some meaningful character development for Bruce Wayne please?” and they go “NO!” and I go “OKAAAY” and they go “You want Bruce Wayne to be a boring edgy loner forever, don’t you?” and I go “noooOOO” and they go “SAY IT!” and I go “I
want Bruce Wayne to be a boring edgy loner forever”. And then I go over to a good DC series which is an oxymoron and I go “Can I please read about my favourite character Wally West?” and they go “Noooooo! In fact, we’re gonna erase him from existence! And you’re gonna be bitter about it for thirty years!”and I go “Why are you doing this to me???” and they go “Because we’re DC comics, and life is a fucking nightmare!” But with superhero cartoons, I’ll just be like “Let’s see if Justice League Action has any new episodes”. So it’s better.
“This is your daily, friendly reminder to use commas instead of periods during the dialogue of your story,” she said with a smile.
“Unless you are following the dialogue with an action and not a dialogue tag.” He took a deep breath and sat back down after making the clarifying statement.
“However,” she added, shifting in her seat, “it’s appropriate to use a comma if there’s action in the middle of a sentence.”
“True.” She glanced at the others. “You can also end with a period if you include an action between two separate statements.”
Things I didn’t know
“And–” she waved a pen as though to underline her statement–“if you’re interrupting a sentence with an action, you need to type two hyphens to make an en-dash.”
You guys have no idea how many students in my advanced fiction workshop didn’t know any of this when writing their stories.
